A new study from the University of California, Irvine finds that the Cox-2 inhibitor Celebrex can help reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in patients with advanced heart disease.
Researchers found that Celebrex, an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase 2, significantly increased the risk of a heart attack or stroke in those with a low baseline body mass index or an elevated risk of a heart attack or stroke.
The study, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, was led by Dr. Steven Nissen and colleagues at the University of California, Irvine.
The study was led by Dr. Robert C. Mathers, a professor of medicine at the University of California, Irvine, and colleagues. The researchers used data from the large population-based cohort of patients at least 5 years apart.
Dr. C. Mathers and colleagues tested a new Cox-2 inhibitor, Celebrex, in patients with early heart disease and found that it significantly increased the risk of a heart attack or stroke.
They looked at the number of deaths or strokes occurring in the participants of the study. The researchers found that the Cox-2 inhibitor significantly increased the risk of a heart attack or stroke in those with a low baseline body mass index or an elevated risk of a heart attack or stroke.
The study also showed that the Celebrex treatment led to a reduction in the risk of stroke in those with a low baseline body mass index or an elevated risk of a stroke.
Mathers said he was pleased to see that the Cox-2 inhibitor Celebrex increased the risk of a heart attack or stroke.
“I’m pleased with the results,” he said.
Nissen said that patients with early heart disease and low baseline body mass index were more likely to have a stroke than those without.
“This suggests that the Cox-2 inhibitor Celebrex might be able to treat early heart disease,” he said. “It’s a good idea to check in with your healthcare provider to see if the drug can help with heart disease.”
In addition, the researchers found that patients with a low baseline body mass index were less likely to develop a stroke than those with an elevated risk of a stroke.
Mathers said that the researchers did not have a control group of patients. But they found that patients who took Celebrex had a higher chance of developing a stroke than those who took the placebo group. The researchers also found that patients who took the Cox-2 inhibitor Celebrex were also more likely to have a heart attack or stroke.
Mathers said that the Cox-2 inhibitor Celebrex may also help reduce the risk of heart disease in patients with heart disease who are at higher risk of cardiovascular events.
“Our findings provide a new pathway to potentially reducing the risk of heart disease in patients with advanced heart disease,” he said.
The study was published Monday in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.
The researchers said that the Cox-2 inhibitor Celebrex was approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration on Jan. 13, 2004.
JAMA Internal Medicine“I was pleased to see that the Cox-2 inhibitor Celebrex increased the risk of a heart attack or stroke,” said Dr. Nissen. “I believe this may be due to the interaction between the Cox-2 inhibitor and another Cox-2 inhibitor.”
Mathers said that the Cox-2 inhibitor Celebrex increased the risk of a heart attack or stroke in patients with early heart disease and low baseline body mass index.
“We know that the Cox-2 inhibitor can reduce the risk of stroke, but we don’t know whether the Cox-2 inhibitor has the same effect as the Cox-2 inhibitor.”
“We’re still learning about the possible interactions between the Cox-2 inhibitor and another Cox-2 inhibitor,” said Dr. Mathers. “We still don’t know whether the Cox-2 inhibitor is the same drug as the Cox-2 inhibitor.”
“The data may suggest a different way for patients to use the drugs,” he added.
